Baxter Cited in Tainted Heparin Class Action
Madison, IL: A class-action lawsuit filed this week not only seeks compensation for scores of patients harmed by tainted heparin, the claim sheds new light on the whole sordid story. For the first time, a manufacturer has been accused of altering the profile of the drug, in an attempt to reduce costs. The allegation is that Baxter—the pharmaceutical giant—altered an ingredient in heparin that flowed through heparin syringes to patients, resulting in pain and suffering, and sometimes death, to those affected.
FDA Tags Entire Class of Drugs for Risk of Suicide
Washington, DC: As if the current economic morass America finds itself in isn't enough to drive people to despair, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that patients prescribed antiepileptic drugs could face the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The agency has mandated that a veritable basket of drugs, used to treat everything from psychiatric disorders to migraine headaches—as well as epilepsy—will be required to update their product labels.
